Sooooooo, What Did You Think?

Submitted by Caitlin Zaino on April 13, 2011 – 11:31 pm16 Comments

First there was the pop of the cork, the smell of baking empanadas, and the cheers of friends and family. And then, back in April, The Urban Grocer made its television debut.

Over the past several months, I have had the incredible opportunity to share with the Cooking Channel audience all of the amazing food finds and people I uncovered in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A thriving hothouse of cool, this South American city was an absolute dream to feature. From expert sommeliers like Nigel, to adorable in-the-know foodies like Maria, to amazing young chefs whose inspiration was contagious, I had a blast in Bs As and I hope you enjoyed watching the journey.

And if you missed it the first time around, no worries! We’re re-airing throughout October, so be sure to check out a full list of air times, set your DVR to record series, and help us spread the good word.

A massive thank you to all who have tuned in, generated chatter, and supported this project. For the production team and I, The Urban Grocer is a true labor of love and we’re so grateful and thrilled to have had the opportunity to share it with you.

So now that the dust has settled, we’re dying to know: What did you think?!? What were your favorite moments? What places do you want to visit? We’d love to hear it all!

LOVED it! Thought it was great. Loved Caitlin and I thought the concept was fresh and new.

My favorite spot had to be Tegui. I think. I loved the idea of taking the traditional asado flavors and capturing it in mashed potatoes!

    Can’t wait to see more!

  • Patricia says:

Wonderful show. Made me feel like I was on a vacation :) I also liked that it was a different take on Buenos Aires. It was really interesting to see something fresh.

  • Jake says:

Loooooooved it! I want to know more about that place in Uruguay. How can I get there now?

  • Cool, thanks! Happy you all liked it!

Tegui was amazing. An absolute joy and those potatoes were unreal. I could definitely go for that right about now :)

As for Uruguay, you can get more info on their site if you’re seriously considering getting to Estancia Vik: http://www.vikretreats.com/ It’s about a 50 minute flight outside of Buenos Aires and well worth it. It was by far one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been.

Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming!

So cute! That ice cream looked yummy!

  • erik says:

I am addicted already! More please!

  • vicky says:

Congratulations on a wonderful show. I DVRed it and was just able to watch it and I loved the young, fresh take you took. What a great and welcomed change to the Cooking Channel!

  • Gourmeur says:

Loved the show! I wish they had decent ice cream where I am living right now. Tell the guys in Buenos Aires to set up shop in Europe!

  • Ha! Thanks for the fabulous feedback.

Gourmeur – I actually think that one of the main chains in Buenos Aires – Freddo – was due to open a shop in London. I can’t say Freddo has the best ice cream in Bs As (because in my opinion it doesn’t) but at least you can get Argentine helado next time you’re there!

  • Christy says:

To be honest, didn’t grab me at first, but as I continued to watch, it got my attention and loved all the food being shown and discussed. It was also great to chat on twitter during the airing :)

You now have a fan, and have an open invite to The Magic City of Birmingham!

    Bravo! Well done Caitlin.
Would LOVE to watch, but not sure we can get it here in Oz. Is it online?

  • Jocelyn Z says:

Excellent show! My husband and I went to BA two years ago, around February, for our honeymoon. I loved it – I’m not a wine person and even I fell in love with Malbecs.

However, I didn’t like the ice cream. I thought it was too sweet, which is almost unnatural. I am such a dessert fan.

Anyway, I wanted to catch your debut because I love the location, but you’re adorable and I’ll be watching more in the future because it was a good show.

  • Thanks for all the fantastic feedback! I’m thrilled to hear that so many people enjoyed the show – it has been a real labor of love from the very start so it’s exciting to have it out there and well received :)

Christy – It was great to chat with you too and I’m happy you kept on watching and liked it in the end :) And if I find myself in Birmingham, I’m taking you up your offer!

Katrina- Thanks!! I don’t think it’s available online but all of the Australians have been soooo supportive and amazing. Hopefully we can get down to Oz one day…

Jocelyn – Awesome that you liked the show (and me, thanks!) – Great that you’ll be watching in the future! I see what you’re saying re the ice cream. I liked it at Persicco because the flavors felt cleaner but I remember a banana split at Un Altra Volta that seriously tasted like bubble gum – and not in a good way…Many thanks again for the support!

  • MB says:

Loved the show, great job! :) Wish I could go to Buenos Aires and have some amazing food!

  • Blaine says:

It was just by chance that I caught the show, and I gotta say – I loved it!

It was so fresh and exciting. Seriously, now I want to get on a plane and visit South America. Everything looked really exciting and delicious, but I think my favorites were the Uruguay spot (amazing) and Casa Felix. I was totally in awe of the natural beauty there and am really inspired by all the creativity and passion of the young chefs.

I don’t think I really had any idea of what I expected life in Argentina to be like, but I was really surprised at the modern and youthful vibe you portrayed.

Thanks Caitlin, keep the shows coming :)

  • Angela says:

Hola Caitlin! Great, great show. I think you really captured BA’s current trends in cuisine. It’s a fun place to be right now. A lot more than just beef and Malbec. So glad you chose to begin here.

My favorite part was Casa Felix. Diego’s amazing. I love that he uses native ingredients, that his creations are healthy, and that he cooks fish! Most places that serve seafood prepare it the same way (Galician style usually).

    Cheers!
    Angela
