Gelato Mania!
Here’s the thing. I never got what was so special about gelato. I pretended to. And I would really try too. Traipsing around Italy in the summers, I’d always map out the best gelaterias, insist on trying their flagship flavor, and then walk away slightly perplexed about what it was I was missing. That is, until I found Gelato Mania.
With several locations throughout my home base of Geneva, Switzerland Gelato Mania boasts lines out the door, heaps of rave reviews, and happy kids with cones running out of their neon, minimalist shops. So not too long ago I went in and gave it a go, as always. Only this time it was different – for me, at least.
Creamy, thick flavors like coconut, chocolate, and cinnamon, though simple, are sensational. And granted we’re in Switzerland where chocolate expectations are high, but their version of this sumptuous gelato is more akin to eating the best frozen brownie ever – made with Swiss cream and chocolate, to boot. Their cinnamon is spicy, sweet, and smooth, a perfect complement to the more rugged coffee or slightly burnt caramel. And then there are the sorbets. My tendencies lean towards the pack-a-punch gelatos but their mouth-watering, drool-inducing, come-back-for-more icy, fresh sorbets are something special. Passion fruit, mango, watermelon, and their infamous, basil and pineapple, glisten like snow on the Mont Blanc.
So after many years, thanks to Gelato Mania I’m proud of my new gelato-loving, cone-carrying self.
