Score! El Diez, Mexico City

Submitted by Caitlin Zaino on March 6, 2010 – 4:00 amNo Comment

el diezHidden away in Mexico City’s hip Condesa neighborhood, El Diez restaurant sports photos of footballers hung haphazardly on dark exposed brick walls beside postcards from Argentina. And while sitting at simple wooden tables on rickety chairs, diners indulge in mouth-watering, fall-off-that-rickety-chair good, melt-in-your-mouth steak. Clearly, you don’t come to El Diez for the decor; you come for the meat.

So go on, take a bite. Like al dente pasta, momentary resistance from a browned, modestly salty, smoky crust gives way to gorgeous juiciness. With each bite, explosive flavors burst into your mouth saturating every corner with pure, natural, meaty succulence. The texture is unreal, the taste incomprehensible. You have little choice but to close your eyes while it lingers on your tongue.

Don’t be fooled. El Diez is not a secret. With meat this good, it wouldn’t be possible. But if you’re fortunate to go, brave the long lines. It’s worth it every time.
